Bicycle bell

There are 5 reasons I used to like riding my old bicycle.
  1. It DIDN’T GO FAST so there was minimal risk of my being in an accident.
  2. It COULD STOP ON A DIME. Since I pretty much had to keep pedaling to keep going, not pedaling was almost like braking.
  3. It gave me a much BETTER WORKOUT than other bikes. As I say I had to keep pedaling to keep moving and pedaling was no walk in the park (did I really say that?).
  4. I DIDN’T MIND LEAVING IT locked at the train station. My bike did not have much sex appeal or any other kind of appeal so I didn’t worry much about it being stolen. Sure, if I lost it there would be the hassle and cost of replacing it, but there had been no initial investment on my part, so not a serious setback.
  5. I DIDN’T HAVE TO WARN pedestrians when I rode up behind them on my bike. The pedals were so squeaky that people had plenty of advance warning when I approached.

  6. OK, here’s a 6th reason that is a corollary of number 5. I DIDN’T NEED A BELL (see #5).
Last year my family gave me a new bike for my birthday. I was speechless. I couldn’t even fathom the idea of having a good bike of my own. Would I have to give up all those fine benefits of my old bike? Well maybe not. I could continue to ride my old bike anytime I had to leave it some place like the train station. I certainly would not want to leave my new bike exposed.

My daily commute used to be: ride old bike 1 mile to train station and lock the bike there, ride train 3 miles to the next stop to catch a shuttle bus, then ride shuttle bus 10 miles to work. But HERE is the thing! If I ride my bike FOUR miles each morning to the shuttle bus I can load the bike onto the rack on the front of the bus and have my bike with me at work. After work load it back onto the bus, ride the bus 10 miles, and then ride the bike 4 miles back home. Or better yet, on some days ride the bike all the way home from work.

On my first outings with the new bicycle, several times I took people unawares as I rode up behind them swiftly and silently on my new stealth bike. My unsuspecting victims jumped, but it was not joy I read on their faces. Luckily my daughter Kim has given me a bell for my bike. I didn’t want one of those bells that says “I ♥ my bike” because “heart” is not a verb. The idea of hearting something has never seemed right to me. The bell she gave me says “I ♥ my bike”…I guess I’ll have to face the facts: I heart my bike. There! I said it!

And here is the 1 reason I like my new bike:

    1. It does my heart good! in all respects
And hearts will trump everything.
